The edge of a city. A working-class street with old and cheap houses, where Julia lives with her son, Eli has a disability and has to use a wheelchair. Eli is 20 years old and he can’t speak, he can’t walk. He can’t do anything by himself. He spent the days in a wheelchair. He has grown up and Julia’s hernia doesn’t let her carry him in her arms (as she used to do) down the stairs. So, he doesn’t leave the flat. Julia is determined to solve this situation by installing a ramp to push Eli’s wheelchair and take him outside. Such a simple task can be an impossible undertaking when all conditions are unfavorable and, above all, if its completion depends on the goodwill and kindness of others.

Extrarradio de una ciudad. Barrio obrero de viejas viviendas baratas, donde vive Julia con su hijo Eli, tiene una discapacidad y solo puede estar en una silla de ruedas. Eli tiene 20 años y no habla, no puede andar, no puede hacer nada, apenas pasar los días en su silla de ruedas. Ahora el chico ha crecido demasiado y la hernia de Julia no le permite cargarlo en brazos, como hacía siempre, para bajar las escaleras del edificio hasta llegar a la calle. Así que ya no sale de casa. Julia está empeñada en resolver esa situación haciendo construir una rampa por la que poder bajar la silla de ruedas de su hijo. Pero una cosa tan sencilla puede resultar una empresa imposible cuando todas las condiciones son desfavorables y, sobre todo, si su consecución depende de la voluntad y de la bondad de los otros.

“La alegría” es, de entre todas mis obras, la que reúne todo lo que considero que es el teatro en el que creo y el que yo quiero hacer, ideológica y estéticamente. Por eso, que sea leído en el Cervantes Theatre me llena de felicidad, no sólo por poder escuchar mis palabras en inglés y la posibilidad de que mi obra se difunda a nivel internacional, sino porque el teatro contemporáneo británico es y simpre ha sido mi mayor referente teatral. Que mi trabajo pueda verse, oírse, leerse en el seno del teatro que más admiro y con el que más me identifico es, sin lugar a dudas, un inmenso orgullo y un gran regalo.

MARILIA SAMPER

Graduated in Directing and Dramaturgy at the Institut del Teatre de Barcelona. Some of her theatrical texts are 405, which was awarded second prize for the Miguel Romero Esteo Prize and the 2001 Marqués de Bradomín National Prize; Menú del día, second prize for the Miguel Romero Esteo Award and the 2002 Marqués de Bradomín National Award; Un verdadero cowboy, Ciutat de València 2006 Award and Carlos Carvalho Award from the VI National Dramaturgy Contest of Porto Alegre, Brazil;

Born in 1974 in Sao Paolo, Brazil, to a Brazilian mother and Sevillian father. After living in various countries, at the age of twelve, she went to live permanently in Spain. She spent her entire adolescence in Andalusia and it was there where she entered the theatre scene. She studied acting at the Instituto del Teatro of Seville, and worked with various Sevillian companies, such as Viento Sur Teator, La Matrona, and the Andalusian Theatre Centre. She then, almost by chance, began to write and with her first published and awarded texts, she came to Barcelona in 2001 and received a degree in Stage Direction and Theatre Arts from the Institut del Teatre. Since then, she has developed her career as an author and director, and her plays have been performed on the most-prestigious stages of Barcelona.

Happiness is the result of her Artist-in-residence work at Sala Beckett/Obrador Internacional de Dramatúrgia.

Algunos de sus textos teatrales son 405, accésit del Premio Miguel Romero Esteo y del Premio Nacional Marqués de Bradomín 2001; Menú del día, accésit del Premio Miguel Romero Esteo y del Premio Nacional Marqués de Bradomín 2002; Un verdadero Cowboy, Premi Ciutat de València 2006 y Premi Carlos Carvalho del VI Concurso Nacional de Dramaturgia de Porto Alegre, Brasil;

Marilia Samper, nació en São Paulo, Brasil, en el año 1974. De madre brasileña y padre sevillano, tras vivir en diferentes países, a los doce años se instala de forma permanente en España. Pasa toda su adolescencia en Andalucía y allí comienza a introducirse en el mundo del teatro. Estudia Interpretación en el Instituto del Teatro de Sevilla, y trabaja con diferentes compañías sevillanas, como son Viento Sur teatro, La Matrona y el Centro Andaluz de Teatro. Casi por casualidad, comienza a escribir. Con sus primeros textos premiados y publicados, llega a Barcelona, en el año 2001 y se licencia en Dirección Escénica y Dramaturgia por el Institut del Teatre. Desde entonces ha ido desarrollando su trayectoria como autora y directora, y ha sido representada en los escenarios más emblemáticos de Barcelona.

PAULA PAZ

Artistic Director

Paula Paz is the cofounder and Artistic Director of the Cervantes Theatre in London and the Spanish Theatre Company.

At the Cervantes Theatre she has directed Darwin’s Tortoise by Juan Mayorga, The Swallow by Guillem Clua, The Little Pony by Paco Bezerra, Ay, Carmela! by José Sanchis Sinisterra, The House of the Spirits by Caridad Svich after Isabel Allende’s novel, Cartas Vivas. Carmen Laforet and Elena Fortún and Black, el Payaso by Pablo Sorozábal. Other directing credits include Knives in Hens by David Harrower at the KC Theatre and she has also worked as a dramaturg, movement director and assistant director in opera.

Paula holds an MA with Distinction in Theatre Directing from Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts, a BA (Hons) in Advertising and Public Relations from the Complutense University of Madrid and she began her professional career as a ballet dancer with companies such as Angel Corella Ballet, Maria Gimenez Ballet and Ballet Ireland.
